There’s something to be said for both. And we’re not just talking about fences. When you think about the word “modern”, what comes to mind? You’re thinking shiny, up-to-date, innovative and ahead of the game. (Kind of like the Taylor Fencing blog, right?) When you think about classic, you think about something that has staying power, that has stood the test of time and continues to be iconically popular. There are benefits to both, in the greater scheme of things, but today – we’re focusing on fences. It’s what we do. And, we’re pretty good at it. The Taylor Fencing team has been in the industry for decades. The fact that we’re a family-built company means that we understand the importance of having honest conversations, taking care of each other and our customers, and sharing the right information. There are no lies or false advertisements here. We’re genuinely looking to share all of the right information with you. And that’s exactly why we started this blog.
Any decisions related to your home are going to be tough. Buying a home is tough. Building a home is tough. Renovating a home is tough. All of the above are on the list of the most stressful events that you can go through in life. We’re talking about a list that also includes weddings and divorces. But, think about it. You’re going to celebrate birthdays in a home. You could even experience “first” birthdays in a home. You’ll see the ups and downs of life, like promotions and tough days and everything in between.
What’s the first thing that you see when you arrive on a property like the aforementioned? The fence! Calling card, curb appeal, property value increase, we don’t care what you call it. Especially when you work with Taylor Fencing, you know that any sort of fence is going to make your neighbours and friends know exactly how much effort and care you’ve put into your property.
Which brings us back to our original question. Classic or modern? We’ve got some thoughts. Read on for more information:
The first question to ask is about the current style of your home. Is it a craftsman? A Victorian? The list goes on. This doesn’t necessarily dictate what sort of fence you choose, but it’s important to be aware of the property itself. If you want to remain with the current style of the home, do your research and determine exactly what sort of fence makes the most sense for you. Or… if you don’t have the time (and about 99 percent of us don’t), email, call or visit Taylor Fencing. All it takes is one visit out to your property to discern what architectural style you’re working with before you make your decision.
The next question is a little bit more tricky… Do you actually want to stay with the architectural style that your home has, or do you want to mix it up? There is no shame either way. It has become extremely trendy to mix up different styles for different components of your home. These days, you can very easily have a Victorian style home with a COLORBOND fence. It mixes things up. It keeps things fresh. And it reinforces your thought process as someone who is being innovative with their property.
Of course, there is the question about property lines. You may have read the posts on our blog about the best ways to work with your neighbours. Depending on where you live and the council laws that are in place in the area of which you live, you may not have a ton of say in this matter. But, if this isn’t the case, the next thing that you need to look at, is how much real estate your landscaping has. Do you have a vast lawn that you want people to see? Or are you trying to keep your fencing as close as possible to the front door of your home? Classic and modern can each play a role here, especially if you want those passing by to admire exactly what you’re doing with your lawn. Granted, if you have young children or pets, you may be of the mindset that you don’t want anyone seeing into your property. That’s perfectly fine, and safety is a huge reason why we care so much about this topic. Even then, there are both modern and classic solutions that can solve this for you. Tubular steel? Great! Visitors can “ooh” and “aah” over the seasonal plants that you’re taking painstaking care of. A wooden fence? We can even customize it, so that the plants are integrated into the first impression that anybody sees. The options are endless and we’re here to help.
The final question is really about price. We talk about this all of the time on the Taylor Fencing blog, but it’s an evergreen question. While home prices go up and down over time, our prices do not. If anything, they’re far more competitive than anything else in the industry and they’ll always continue to stay that way. There are certain misconceptions about both modern and classic types of fences… With modern, you see the shows on television and hear the ridiculous prices of condominiums and homes, despite their minimalistic approach. With classic homes, you hear that they’re historic and carry so much value and so you should pay the price for that. Here’s where we want to change the narrative. Our fences are competitive and our prices always will show that. We source our materials strategically and sustainably. It’s something that we’re very proud of, and we’ll never shy away from sharing that information with you.
Phew! A lot to think about, right? Like we said, homes and fences are an investment. But, we’re on your side. So, reach out with any questions. And we’ll ensure that we make the best decision for you.
